The Road Not Taken
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -
I took the one less traveled by.
And that has made all the difference.
The road not taken – poem written by American poet Robert Frost, reflects the feelings of the founders, Mr. Lin Chien-hung and Ms. Chang Chi-hua, of Hung Chung Enterprise.
In 1989, Mr. Lin, who took chemical engineering as a major in college, chose to challenge the water-based waterproofing industry, instead of the most popular industries, such as textile and chemical specialized material.
Mr. Lin was very fond of architecture, and he found that many buildings have water leakages due to frequent rains and earthquakes in Taiwan, or the inappropriate materials used and wrong construction methods.
“To increase the living quality and the lifecycle of buildings by using good quality of waterproofing products.” this was Mr. Lin’s original intention. At the time, Mr. Lin had the foresight that water-based, toxic-free, and eco-friendly products will be the new trend in the future, even though the main trend product was oil-based waterproofing material in the market. But import fees of waterproofing materials from Europe was very expensive and locally developed materials were rare. Hence, Mr. Lin established Heng Chung Enterprise CO. LTD. and determined to devote himself to the development of waterproofing products. Mr. Lin built PLIMATES as the exclusive brand to achieve three wins among manufacturers, construction workers, and consumers.
As the pioneer in the waterproofing industry, this is not an easy path to walk by. Mr. and Mrs. Lin worked hard every day and keen to learn the latest knowledge from other countries. Through their hard work, they developed eco-friendly waterproofing products at reasonable price. And they brought a revolution and won great reputation in three dimensions: manufacturers, construction workers, and consumers’ approvals.
Because of the special property of water-based waterproofing product is different from oil-based waterproofing products. They were facing challenges, such as how to change the usage habit of construction workers who used oil-based waterproofing products for a long time; and doubts from consumers, “Is water-based waterproofing products suitable for constructions?” or “Does it sustainable for constructions?”
We have passed through every storm.
Heng Chung Enterprise now is the leading brand in the waterproofing industry and owned six modernized factories. But Mr. and Mrs. Lin started their business by a small leased factory in which the rooftop was once torn by a typhoon.
Our main factory locates in Gangshan Benjhou Industrial Park, which is low pollution, high technology and only accepts the enterprises who passed the national assessment. There are laboratory, raw material storage, production lines, and product warehouse. Each part stands independently and complies with security procedures, and also passed the ISO9001 assessment. We also export our waterproofing products overseas, our main markets are China, Hong Kong, Southeast Asia, India, Australia, New Zeeland, Latin America, and other countries.
The co-founder – Ms. Chang (Mrs. Lin) took over the responsibility as Chairwoman, because of our founder – Mr. Lin has passed away in 2015. As a former ballet dancer, she also showed the flexibility and strength in managing a business. Even though the challenges still keep coming, but she kept the spirits like “Step over the stones in the way, if you cannot step over it, smash or move it, DO NOT GIVE UP.” That is how she leads the team to achieve great sales revenues during the economy recession.
Heng Chung Enterprise is the reflection of other enterprises who started their own business with scratch, and they gained fruitful results because of the economy and GDP was rising in Taiwan in 1989. The founder couple stayed with their first intention when starting a water-based waterproofing business and brought revolutions in the industry by bravely choosing a different path.
